Description

SW 72 NW GWEEK

8/128 Napheane Farmhouse
-
II*

Farmhouse circa mid C17 extended probably C18 and altered internally in 1931.
Limewashed stone rubble with large granite quoins and dressings. Corrugated asbestos
sheet roof (replacing thatch) with gable ends. Galvanized corrugated iron roof over
rear outhsuts. Gable end stacks, the left hand stack is massive and has stone
weathered dripcourse and a tapered top, the small right hand stack is rendered.
Plan: 2-room and cross-passage plan facing north; the hall/kitchen at the lower
right end has a gable end fireplace. It is uncertain whether the right hand room was
originally heated although it now has a gable end stack. Probably in the C18 2
outshuts were added to the north front of the house and it was probably at this time
that the house was reorientated to face south and the passage widened to a stair
hall. In 1931 the house was substantially rebuilt inside but retaining much of its
former plan.
Exterior: 2 storey nearly symmetrical south front 3 window range. C19 2-light
horizontally sliding sashes with glazing bars, the first floor windows have shallow
top lights under the eaves, which is a later alteration when the eaves were raised.
Central doorway with a C20 glazed door. There is a small C20 single storey
outbuilding attached to the left of the front and a single storey outbuilding at the
right hand east end.
North elevation was originally the front; the doorway to the right of centre has a
chamfered granite frame with straight cut stops, a C19 planked door and a late C19
sash above with margin glazing bars. To the left and right a single storey outshut,
each with a C19 casement on their rear walls. The left hand outshut has a C19 plank
door on its inner right hand side. The outshut roofs continue over the rear doorway
to form a porch.
Interior: Much altered in 1931 with matchboard partitions and exposed softwood
joists. Staircase of 1931 has a baluster of Victorian bed reused as a newel post.
Roof: Probably also rebuilt in 1931.
Napheane was formerly in Constantine parish. It was situated on the boundary of the
manors of Merthen and Tucoys; an account of the holding is described by Henderson.

Napheane was formerly in Constantine parish before the parish boundary changed.
