- of Tregithew Farmhouse

GV II

Bank barn and horse engine house. C18 and C19. Serpentine rubble walls, dressed
granite monolith sills, jambs and lintels. Steep hipped scantle slate roof with clay
ridge tiles.
Large rectangular barn with 2 first floor winnowing bays over probable shippon which
has been used as stabling since the C19. Horse engine house added to rear right
circa mid-late C19 with canted hipped end carried on quarried granite posts. Earth
bank at rear largely removed since.
2 storeys or 1 storey over basement. South front of barn with 2 first floor
winnowing doorways grouped towards middle, Original ground floor doorway, right.
Middle and left-hand doorways and 2 small ground floor windows are later insertions.
Left-hand side wall has blocked full width 1st floor doorway originally for unloading
sheaves from waggons. Rear has 2 original first floor doorways opposite those at
front.
The horse engine house has lost its machinery but retains some of the timber
associated with it in the roof space.
Interior of barn is very complete. Original floors and original close set pine roof
trusses with lapped and pegged collars and pegged apices.
An unusually complete C18 barn later modernised in the C19 by the addition of an
engine house for threshing machinery driven by horses or oxen.
