House. C16/C17, altered in mid-C19. Timber framed, mainly clad with red brick
in Flemish bond (partly painted), and partly plastered, roofed mainly with
handmade red clay tiles, partly with C20 concrete tiles. 4 bays aligned approx.
N-S with axial stack to S of centre, and 3-bay crosswing to N, with central
stack. C18/C19 dairy to N of crosswing, lean-to extensions in NE angle and to E
of crosswing. C18/C19 parallel range to E of main range, with internal stack at
N end. Mid-C19 single-storey entrance hall to E, of painted brick in Flemish
bond, with clerestorey hipped roof of decorative semi-octagonal slates. 3
storeys. E elevation, scattered fenestration. In entrance hall, 2 Gothic
Revival windows with 2-centred heads, and one mid-C19 sash of 3 + 6 lights.
4-panel door with upper panels glazed, with shallow canopy on scrolled brackets.
W elevation, main block, painted brick in Flemish bond. Ground floor, one C19
splayed bay of sashes of 6-12-6 lights, 2 late C19 sashes of 3 + 6 lights and
one of 1 + 2 lights. First and second floors, late C19 sashes of 6, 6, 2 and 6
lights respectively. Crosswing, ground floor, 2 C18/early C19 sashes of 12
lights; first floor, one C18/early C19 tripartite sash of 4-12-4 lights. A
brick string course on the main block is continued by a plaster band on the
crosswing. 4 plaster diamonds on the main block at second floor height, one on
the gable of the crosswing. Crested tiles on ridge of main block. The main
block has transverse beams, some boxed in, one chamfered with lamb's tongue
stops. The walls have been built up in brick in the mid-C19 to 3 storeys. The
crosswing has jowled posts, arched braces to the tiebeams, and primary straight
bracing, partly exposed. The entrance block on the E side is of unusual
interest, and appears to be built over a contemporary cellar. RCHM 23.
