Description

GWENNAP LITTLE BESIDE SW 74 SW 4/144 Little Beside House - GV II Country house. Manor house on O.S. map. Early C19, and extended early-mid C19. Stucco. Slurried scantle slate roofs with parapet to front and brick chimneys over gable ends. Plan of 2 rooms with central stair hall; extended at either end circa early C19 with 1-room wings, originally 1 storied but left-hand (south east) wing later heightened to provide first floor. Long central rear service wing with further wing at right angles to south east and enclosing rear courtyard. 2 storeys. 1:3:1 bay north east front. 2-storey wing, left, and 1-storey wing right. Central nearly symmetrical original 3-window part is broken forward. Plinth, mid-floor string, moulded stucco parapet cornice and flanking rusticated quoin strips. Original hornless 12-pane sashes with crown glass. Slate sills. Nearly central doorway with part-glazed porch with arched lights and paired consoles under cornice. Pair of part-glazed doors with arched lights. Flanking wings each have original Gothic sash with glazing bars. Left-hand wing has string under sill and moulded eaves cornice. Original 12-pane hornless sash. Rear is partly slate-hung. Wing parallel to main front has 16-pane horizontal sliding sashes. Interior Very intact to original part of large stair hall and adjoining reception rooms. Stair hall has fine geometric stair with open string, moulded treads, scrolled tread ends, step. Geometric galleried landing, over Vitruvian scroll frieze and moulded cornice. Plaster ceiling with acanthus cornice and trailing rose band. Left and right-hand rooms have egg and dart over bead and reel to cornices and moulded ceiling bands, with trailing wine to left-hand room and anthemion to other room. Original 6-panel doors architraves, skirtings and window shutters. Other parts not inspected.
