Description

MALPAS C.P. HIGH STREET
SJ 44 NE
(East Side)
2/65 Alport Cottage
22/10/1952
GV II

Infants' school, now dwelling, forming north wing of Alport's School,
a symmetrical building (see The Old School House item 64 and Alport
House item 63 for the centrepiece and south wing), 1833, red-brown
brick with grey slate roof. 2 storeys; 2 bays. The front is designed
to match Alport House (q.v.) but the brick is redder and the parapet
base a little lower. Stone plaque above the door inscribed MALPAS OLD
INFANT SCHOOL ERECTED AD MDCCCXXXIII. Ridge chimney and rear gable
chimney. The open north side has 2 casements under cambered arches.
The stone-coped rear gable has dentilled verges and a blank
camber-arched recess.
Interior: Not inspected.
Alport Cottage, The Old School House and Alport House are an unusual
and attractive example of a school built and twice extended in unified
style, 1745-1833.
