SJ 44 NE
(North Side)
2/36 Gates, gatepiers and
steps at south-west
corner of churchyard.
GV II*
Pair of gates, gatepiers and steps, the gates made for Oulton Park,
probably 1720's (at the time of Vanbrugh's work there), and moved to
Malpas churchyard 1773; the piers and steps probably 1773. Gates and
overthrow of wrought iron, piers and steps of red sandstone.
Arrowhead dogbars; floral motif between each pair of vertical rails in
lockrail; leafy scrollwork in central panels of gates and in
overthrow, with Egerton crest. Pair of masonry gatepiers, with a tall
recessed panel on each side, have projecting plinths, moulded cornices
and ornate urn finials. One of 2 pairs of Oulton Park gates. See also
item 34. In design and execution the gates and overthrow are
excellent. (Revd.Canon T.M.Rylands, M.A., An Illustrated History of
