GAMLINGAY CHURCH END
TL 2452 (South east side)

12/38
No 8

GV II

Cottage. Mid-late C17, and small C18 extension at each end. Renovated.
Timber framed, part exposed in rear wall, and rendered. Long straw thatch
roof with red brick ridge stack. Original plan of single range of four bays,
extended by one bay at each end C18, probably for pantries when the cottage
was subdivided. One storey and attic. Front wall has five ground floor wood
casements including one small window to each of C18 end bays and one modern
window partly on the site of a doorway dating from the subdivision. The gable
ends have modern weatherboarding and openings. The rear wall has evidence at
each end of the additions. Upward bracing to wall framing. Interior: One
bay remains open to the roof. Originally there was a framed and plaster
chimney of which some of the framing remains. Most of this chimney was
removed in C18 when the present red brick chimney and inglenook hearths were
built. Clasped side purlin roof.
