TL 51 NW HATFIELD BROAD OAK

House. C15 and mid C16. Timber framed and plastered with gabled pegtile roofs.
Of 2 storeys and of U plan form with C20 extension forming the western side. The
roofs of the eastern and northern blocks both sweep down to single storey level
on the courtyard side. The north (front) elevation has the eastern range
projecting forward with a gable to the left. The main block has an off-centre
C20 gabled porch with an off-centre ridge line stack over. The eastern range is
long wall jettied with octagonal painted timber posts framing the entrance door.
Much of this and north side are ashlared. Windows are C19 or C20 casements with
small panes but with one tripartite double hung sash on the north end. A large
rear wall stack has 2 tall diagonal shafts rebuilt to original pattern.
Internally the east range shows mid C16 timber framing and one good arched door
head with sunk spandrels on the first floor. The staircase in this block has an
upper level balustrade of late C16 turned balusters and lower flight of early
C18 turned balusters. some C17 panelling. Part of north range is a single
aisled structure of probable C15 with jowled posts and substantial arcade
braces. Tie beams have large hollow chamfers. RCHM 26.
