Description

SX 86 NE ABBOTSKERSWELL ABBOTSKERSWELL
3/10 Nos. 1 and 2 Church Cottages
-
23.8.55
GV II
Pair of cottages, formerly 3. Probably circa late C17/early C18. Considerably
altered in C20. Sandstone/limestone rubble walls with hipped thatched roof. 2
large projecting rubble lateral stacks at rear. Brick stack at left-hand gable end.
Original plan obscured by later alterations but likely always to have been a row of
cottages, possibly farm cottages for Court Farm (q.v.); each was originally
probably 2 room plan with 1 principal heated room. At present No. 2 consists of 2
cottages converted to 1.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front, all 3-light circa mid C20 metal frame
casements with diamond 'leaded' panes. 3 rustic thatched porches to left and right
and right of centre; the left-hand one to No. 1 has C19 6 panel door, top 2-lights
glazed. Porch to right of centre has had door removed and sheet of plate glass
inserted. the right-hand porch for No. 2 has C20 plank door.
Interior: No original features visible in No. 2, plan much altered, No. 1 also
appears not to have any original features exposed internally.
Despite internal alterations these cottages still appear relatively traditional
externally and form part of an attractive group in the village centre with the
church house and Court Farm Inn.
