Chest tomb. 1861, probably to designs of the sculptor Baron Morochetti. Marble
chest tomb, with hipped top, set on granite plinth and with metalwork details;
railings and bronze wreath have been removed. Commemmorates Ugo Foscolo
(1778 - 1827), great Italian patriot and the greatest early C19 Romantic
Italian poet after Leopardi. In 1871 Foscolo's bones were disinterred by
the Italian authorities and removed to the church of Santa Goce in Florence.
