SD 91 SW MILNROW WILD HOUSE LANE (east side) 3/119 Birchinley Manor Farmhouse (formerly listed as 24.1.67 Birchinley under Wild Horse Lane)
GV II* House. "EAM? 1632" on finial, 1631 on door lintel but with a wing which was rebuilt in 1973. Hammer-dressed stone with graduated stone slate roof. 3-unit hearth-passage plan with 2 storeys. Quoins. Projecting cross wings - the right largely rebuilt incorporating 1631 lintel, the left having a recessed porch with seats, chamfered Tudor-arched inner door surround and moulded outer door surround with basket-headed lintel and recessed spandrels, two 5-light ovolo-moulded double-chamfered mullion windows and a similar window of 4 lights which turns the angle. Windows and door are below a continuous hoodmould. Similar 8-light house-part window (one mullion missing) with 3-light window above. Projecting gable chimney stack with 2 diagonally set shafts and a ridge chimney stack, 2 gargoyles. Coped gables with kneelers which have finials at rear. Apex finial is dated. The right crosswing has lost most of its character and value as a result of rebuilding. The rear however survives and apart from 3 and 6-light windows (as above) has another 5-light angle window and a coped gable with kneelers. The rest of the rear has a door with square-cut surround flanked by 5 and 4-light double-chamfered mullion windows and 4, 2 and 3-light windows on the first floor. Interior much altered but retaining original chamfered beams. A building with many unusual and delightful features.
