WATERLOO STREET (west side)
No 1
(Formerly listed as No 1, WATERLOO)
GV
II
Cottage. C18, extended to the south after 1973.
MATERIALS: rubble stone and handmade brick, previously partly roughcast. Pantile roof to the main building, stone slates to the east outshut.
EXTERIOR: the cottage is built on a steep hillside with a rear outshut on the uphill side that appears to form a mezzanine floor to the main building. The door and window openings are formed with flat arches built with handmade brick.
The principal elevation faces away from Waterloo Street, facing downhill westwards. This is of two storeys with a single first floor window. The front door to the ground floor is flanked by similar windows.
The north elevation, the gable facing New Road, is mainly stone built, but includes areas of handmade brickwork including the tumbling-in raised verge to the roof. There are two brick chimney stacks, a ridge stack to the main building and an eaves stack to the rear outshut. There are two windows to this elevation, one to the outshut and a smaller one to the first floor, one of which was blocked in 1973.
The east elevation, facing Waterloo Street, has a plain door with a window to the left. The post-1973 extension to the left (south), which is detailed similarly to the original building, has two further windows to this elevation.
