House. Early C17, extended in C18. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with
handmade red clay tiles. 5 bays facing SW, with central stack forming a
lobby-entrance. Early C18 service wing to rear of left side, with end stack.
Single-storey extension to rear of right side, with catslide roof. C20
flat-roofed 2-storey extension between them. 2 storeys and attics. Ground
floor, 2 early C19 sashes of 16 lights. First floor, 2 early C19 sashes of 20
lights and one of 16 lights. Central half-glazed door with simple moulded
architrave. Sprockets below eaves. Stack has ovolo-moulded cornice, and
rebuilt grouped diagonal shafts. Left return has on the ground floor 2 early
C19 sashes of 20 lights and one of 16 lights, and on the first floor one of 16
lights and 2 more in gabled dormers. C20 sash in attic gable. Service wing is
of one storey with attics, with gambrel roof. The main house has jowled posts
and a clasped purlin roof. The left ground floor room has chamfered bridging
beams with lamb's tongue and roll stops, the soffit of the main beam cut back,
exposed plain joists of vertical section, and a C20 grate. The right ground
floor room has boxed beams, joists plastered to the soffits, and an early C19
pine moulded fire surround. The service wing has a chamfered transverse beam
with lamb's tongue stops. Moated site. The manorial history is in P. Morant,
The History and Antiquities of Essex, 1768, I, 391-2, under the name Wykes; the
manor was in the Sammes family from 1608, and they must have built the present
house.
