Baptist Church: 1860 (datestone); rendered on 3 facades, roughly
squared rubble sides with ashlar quoins and window heads; behind
lower 3 storeys similar but brick window dressings, upper two
better squared stone, ashlar dressings to windows. Slate roof to
front, concrete tiles to rear. 4-bay Chapel at right angles to
road, across slope, with hall below: beyond 5-storey Sunday School
in line. Main facade is a pedimented gable on 4 Doric pilasters
with bases, on an ashlar plinth. Central door with moulded
surround, pedimented head and original double panelled doors. Each
side a tall wooden window and rectangular recess, with recessed
panel below; shouldered head to window, marginal lights to frames:
shorter similar window over door. Large plaque in gable '1860
Baptist Chapel'. Scroll on square block at foot of gable, doubled
at apex. On sides four windows similar to front, but without
recess, and with large projecting keystone. Below offset at chapel
floor level and plain-headed windows to hall. Gable copings at end
of chapel. 5-storey Sunday School block beyond, 3-windows wide.
Internally gallery to chapel on 3 sides, on cast iron columns with
shaped ornamental cast-iron balustrade. Organ gallery extends into
centre of schoolroom block. This block small rooms, vertical-
boarded dado panelling throughout with various staircases. Pews
original, with holes for individual communion cups in main part of
chapel only. A prominent landmark in town, Sunday School probably
added in two stages to chapel soon after 1860.
