SU 74 SE BINSTED WHEATLEY LANE

4/88 Barnfield House

House, once three. c1550,C17, with C20 restoration and minor additions. Timber
frame, with a tile roof. A late medieval hall of 3 bays, with a smoke bay later
filled by a chimney stack, and another timber framed building (granary?) at right
angles, now linked by the infilling of the short intermediate space, to form the
present L-shaped block. ½-hipped roof, shafted stack. Exposed frame, with infill
of plaster, brickwork, but mainly malmstone: the upper well on the south side,
and the west gable, being tile-hung. Casements. Plain doorways. Small single
storeyed service wing at the north end.
