Former country house, now 5 flats. Late C18, 1853 for W. P. Price
by J. Medland. Ashlar; part back smooth render lined as ashlar,
part unlined; slate roof. Five-window, 3-storey centre,
projecting single-bay wings each side, 2 rooms deep: slim tower on
left. Original entrance front, facing west: 5-bay colonnade in
centre, Corinthian columns, end pilasters, full cornice with
balustrade over to lead-flat balcony. Colonnade stone paved: at
rear plinth; in centre half-lazed door, 2 panels below,
rectangular single-pane fanlight, sidelights. Either-side 2 double
French doors, lights over, moulded ashlar surround. Above 5
double French doors, lights over, giving effect of tall mullion and
transom window: stone surround, alternate pointed and segmental
pediments over on consoles. Second floor 5 square 4-pane sashes,
moulded surrounds, blocks under ends of sills. Modillion stone
cornice, carrying lead eaves gutter: hipped roof, lead hips and
ridges, centre Valley: end chimneys with modillion caps.
Projecting wings each side, furrowed plinth, moulded top,
tripartite window to each, French doors and fanlight in centre as
behind colonnade: plain string course above: cantilevered stone
balcony on brackets, with balustrade: similar tripartite window to
below: modillion eaves cornice as centre, hipped roof, similar
chimneys on outer walls. Set back on left 4 stage tower:
battered base with rusticated quoins: plain string course at first
floor level and above roof of 2-storey wing. Above 2 levels
framed plain corners; lower stage coat of arms in raised circle in
sunk square. Above 2-light window, pilasters between and either
side of lights: balustrade below, single-pane sash above, semi-
circular head to each with keystone. Bracketed wide stone eaves,
lead pyramid roof, wrought iron weathervane on apex.
Interior: panelled shutters to front: front room left centre
original entrance hall, Roman toric piers with elliptical arches
form arcade, plaster panelling to soffit and spandrels by entrance
doors. Main stairs pitch-pine, square newels with ball finials,
turned balusters, wall. panelling, rising round open well to double
arch at first floor, plaster panelling to soffit, spandrels and
piers. Stained glass to stair window. Six-panel doors off
landing, moulded surround, semi-circular painted low-relief
carvings over. Short pitch-pine stairs each end to slightly
higher first floor levels in wings. Fireplace in front room,
first floor, to right of centre fluted surround, corner paterae,
iron grate: fluted door surround. Fireplace in centre room,
rear, fine steel surround with side hobs. Spiral timber stair in
centre tower links top 2 floors: top stage originally open.
House originally had servants' wing projecting from rear on left,
ballroom and library on right, with second tower containing water
tank to drive organ blower: demolished mid C20. Cellars below
centre part. W. P. Price was Chairman of the Midland Railway: he
rebuilt and enlarged a 3-storey, 5 window house said to be new
built, but not completed, in 1795 sale catalogue. It had a
pedimented centre, breaking forward slightly, with semi-circular
