Church of St Edmund

A Grade I Listed Building in Downham Market, Norfolk

The Sanctuary (at Easter)

Uploader's Comments

The Sanctuary was re-ordered to enlarge the liturgical space in 1962. Almost exactly 70 years on from the Gothic Revival restoration of the 1890s, in the 1960s this interior was now at its least fashionable. So regrettably, the beautiful reredos and polychrome floor tiles were done away with completely, and the tiled panels lime washed over (which at least saved them). A new floor was put in which wouldn't be out of keeping on a barrack room floor, rather than a church. How on earth did this get a Faculty, one wonders? But it did. In the early C21st, the wall tiles were carefully revealed, and the incumbent, churchwardens and PCC worked to restore some of the lost beauty and centrality of the High Altar. Might a reredos be reintroduced one day?
