A plaque fixed to the exterior says
'Medieval Ruin. Possibly late 13th Century sandstone building revealed during wartime bombing. Some 13th and 14th century pottery was found when the site was excavated in 1971, but archaeologists have not been able to discover its origins or purpose. It may have been a merchants house or possibly linked in some way with nearby Whitefriars Priory.'
