Description

OXFORD ROAD 1. 5104 Moseley B13 Nos 110 and 112 SP 08 SE 12/32 II GV 2. Circa 1906-7 an unusual pair of semi-detached, surveyor built, houses showing up to date Birmingham Arts and Crafts details. Identical plan and build but with subtle variation of composition. Parallel garage approaches separate the 2 houses right back to the linked, gabled garage block at the front garden end. Two storeys and attics painted brick with decorative tile work and brick diapering. Both have broad gabled fronts with cross roofs behind, with chimney stacks and main roofs set back over body of house. Westmoreland slates, overhanging eaves. Both have polygonal bowed casement bay window with corniced pent slate roofs on ground floor and 4 light casements beneath gable on first floor. But the gable of No 110 is carried down over right hand squared timber verandah porch whilst on No 112 the gable stops between floors and the porch entrance is let into wall though the side is open as a verandah. No 112 has slate hanging in the gable and arrow pattern tile work, whilst No 110 has a sinple brick diaper and horizontal tilework band. The cross roof behind gable of No 112 has a weatherboarded wall to front with small attic light butted by external gable end chimney. The eqivalent cross roof is shorter on No 110 but has the same external stack. The dormer here is placed in the main roof behind the cat-slide of the front gable. But No 112 also has a small rectangular weather-boarded bay window below main roof above the porch. The yard elevations overlooking garage drives match each other however with camber arched transomed wood casements and between floor similar stair lights. Wooden gates to the front span the parallel drives between the houses with good Arts and Crafts wrought iron overthrows bearing scrolled plaques with street numbers. The garage block forms a broad gabled projection to centre of garden front composition.
