Description

The following building shall be added to the list

ST 74 NE SELWOOD STYLES HILL

7/512 Cutting revetment with
stone tablet situated at
NGR 788479

GV II

Road cutting revetment and commemorative tablet. 1861. Coursed limestone
rubble wall and dressed stone tablet inscribed: "This Hill was lowered
7 October 1861" in upper case san-serif. The tablet is set in a chamfered
stone surround on the bottom right hand corner of which is a bench mark.
Apparently Styles Hill became a turnpike in about 1830 but since it was too
steep a deeper cutting was made in 1861 and the revetment with its commemora-
tive tablet was constructed.
