House. Lower S part early/mid Cl7, brick N wing of later C18
with facade overlapping older part. Timber framed older part
with red brick outshuts to front and rear under steep catslide
old tile roof, half-hipped at S. Red brick N part with grey
brick flat gauged arches, but grey brick front with red brick
gauged arches. Old red tile gambrel roof, hipped at rear: Originally
a 3-cell, central-chimney plan house facing E with winding stair
beside chimney. 2-storeys and attics, with chamfered axial beams.
N parlour end destroyed when C18 N wing built, providing a new
entrance hall and stair and 2 lofty rooms with chambers and attics
over. Clasped-purlin construction of old roof, altered to butt-
purlin adjoining new structure. Symmetrical E front to newer
part with 2 large Venetian sash windows on each floor and central
entrance. 6-panel moulded door and mutular Doric pilastered
doorcase. Small flat topped dormer behind parapet. Unfortunate
small window inserted over door. 2 red brick chimneys on N end
flanked by blind recesses with gauged brick flat arches. Older
part has 3 casement windows and a large red brick chimney rising
through the rear roofslope. In the older part are chamfered
beams, one with bar stop on 1st floor, chamfered and stopped
doorframe on ground floor, bolection moulded door to stair (which
has an ogee finial to newel at attic level), and vertically moulded
plank doors with H-hinges. In newer N wing is a simple stair,
a raised and fielded panelled corner cupboard with fretted frieze
in office to left of entrance, and a glazed corner cupboard with
shaped shelves and hemicycle head painted with a delicate and
accomplished romantic landscape scene with archers and stags.
