Farmhouse. Early C16, altered and extended C17. Timber-frame on a rubble
and brick plinth (restored), painted brick infil, plain tiled roofs and
brick stacks, the central one is clustered and has a brick modillion cornice.
Irregular U-plan, the 2 rear wings are C17: and attached C19 oast building
at the rear enclosing the rear space. 2 storeys. Farmyard elevation At
the left is the C16 part, close-studded with a mixture of three C19 sash
and C20 casement windows and a curved down-brace on the first floor. At
the right is the end of a C17 wing under a hipped roof and with single
2-light casement windows and down-braces. South (entrance) elevation Gable
end of C16 part at the right and C17 T-plan extension at the left: the
gables of both parts are remodelled in C19 brickwork, C20 lean-to veranda
and porch. North elevation The first floor is supported on a moulded
and bracketted jetty; central brick projection, probably a bread oven.
At the far right is a brick and rubble built hop buildingwhich returns
towards the south elevation: 2 square kilns under pyramidal roofs. Within
the courtyard on the north side is a projecting, square stair tower (the
stair has been removed). Interior: stop-chamfered to C17 room on ground
floor. Close-studding exposed on partition walls of central room on
east (farmyard) side. First floor: the front and rear right rooms both
have plain C17 panelling and the rear room also retains a panelled over-
mantel.
