DEBENHAM
STOWMARKET ROAD
Nos. 2 & 3, White Hall Cottages

II

Former farmhouse, now 2 dwellings. In 3 sections: a main range, perhaps late
C16, with 2 C17 wings set forward. The left wing is corner-to-corner with the
gable end of the main range, joined by a small addition; it probably once
extended further to the rear. The main range originally continued further to
the right. Timber framed, mainly roughcast-rendered; pantiled roof. 2
storeys. C20 casement windows, mostly of mullion and transom pattern. Plank
door in cross-entry to left of main range. Gable end of left wing has C20
gabled porch and boarded door. Stack in left wing has heavy rendered axial
shaft. Internal stack in main range. Interior. Ground floor of main range
has a C17 plaster ceiling, each of the 4 panels containing Fleur-de-lys at
each corner and a central Tudor rose, all with C19 or C20 colouring. Plain
joists set flat in room to right of stack. Left wing has on-edge joists,
exposed first floor framing with curved braces and an oak newel stair.
Exposed framing on upper floor to right wing but one side and much of roof
renewed mid C20.
