Town Improvement Commissioner's Offices, Savings Bank, Mechanics Institute,
Museum and Police Station; taken over as Town Hall 1849. 1844-5 by John Dobson
for North Shields Improvement Commissioners. Coursed squared tooled sandstone
with ashlar dressings; Lakeland slate roof with stone gable copings. L-shaped
range with frontages to Howard Street and Saville Street, enclosing corner
building of Borough Treasurer's Dept. (q.v.). Tudor style. Howard Street
elevation: 2 storeys, 4 bays. Projecting gabled second bay contains boarded
double door and 2-light window under Tudor arches. Similar window at right.
Impost string, continuous with transom of mullioned alternate windows, is
raised to form hoodmoulds. First floor mullioned windows under separate
hoodmoulds except for tall pointed window in gabled bay, whose hoodmould is
continuous with eaves cornice. Battlemented parapet. Tall, corniced octagonal
chimneys at ends and flanking the gable, which has a double ball finial.
Saville Street frontage similar but plainer and more regular. Source: White;
