House. Late C16/early C17. Timber framed; ground floor has irregular framing,
and jettied first floor with small framing; colourwashed lath and plaster and
brick infill. Tile roof with central brick ridge and internal stacks. Moulded
bressumers, and 2 moulded scroll brackets with carved grotesque faces. U-plan. 2
storeys, 2-window range. Entrance in left corner has 4-panelled door in moulded
wood architrave. C19 casements. Ground floor has casement and two C19
rectangular bays, originally shop fronts; left, adjoining entrance, of 6 panes
and 3 thin shafts with moulded capitals and bases; right of 12 panes, with one
corner shaft and adjacent late C20 glazed door. Gable end to Meeting Lane
jettied with exposed framing and moulded and carved bracket to dragon beam.
Lower later C17 timber framed wing to Meeting Lane has old tile roof and
C18/early C19 cross window with glazing bars. To rear some exposed framing and
C19 brick wing. Interior: Much exposed framing. Broad chamfered ceiling and
dragon beams with stepped stops. Jowled post visible on first floor. 2 first
floor rooms have single scroll brackets supporting a ceiling beam. Winder
stairs, and straight flight staircase inserted against right return wall. 2
ground floor rooms have late C20 fireplaces made up of C17 and C18 carvings.
Part of timber framed wing to Meeting Lane and attached C19 brick range now
converted to separate house, No.42A.
