Corner terraced town house. 1731 with c.1792 alterations. Brown brick
with red brick dressings, channelled stucco ground floor, concealed slate
roof. 4 storeys (top floor a c.1792 heightening) and basement. 3
windows wide and 4-window return to Craven Passage. Closet wing plan.
Doorway to left, elliptical arched opening in plain stucco surround with
recessed panelled door and patterned fanlight. Recessed glazing bar
sashes under flat gauged red brick arches. Cornice band finishing off
ground floor stuccowork; stone cornice over 2nd floor and parapet with
coping to attic storey. Bowed cast iron balconettes to 1st floor. Cast
iron area railings with spike finials. Interior retains most of original
features with fielded panelling to passage hall and front rooms, Doric
pilastered archway to stairwell which is similarly panelled with cut and
carved string staircase, changing to closed string for top flights, with
3 turned balusters per tread, column newels and mahogany handrail, the
1st floor front room panelling is elaborated with egg and dart moulded
architraves with shell ornament in ears and good modillion cornice,
chimney breast flanked by fluted Ionic pilasters supporting entablature
with carved pulvinated frieze and the ceiling panelled with 2 rectangles
flanking circle, etc. Part of the Craven family's development of their
Brewhouse estate, laid out by Flitcroft.
