RAWTENSTALL, Cowpe,
(off) COWPE ROAD,
Old Farmhouse c 50 metres south-west of present Cowpe Hall Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse, dated 1752 on datestone at 1st floor to right of porch, now derelict. Watershot coursed sandstone, stone slate roof with one chimney on the ridge and another at the left gable. Double-depth 2-bay plan, with projecting porch to the centre. Two storeys, symmetrical; 2-storey gabled porch with kneelers has at 1st floor a 2-light casement with flush mullion, and in right side wall a plain doorway; 2 windows on each floor, all coupled 4-pane boxed sashes with flush mullions (most damaged). Between upper and lower windows to the right is square datestone with scored decoration, inscribed (in scored lettering) H R J 1752. Left return wall has small lean-to, and behind that 2 windows at ground floor, a window and a doorway at 1st floor. Rear, built back to slope, has damaged single-storey lean-to, and a window at 1st floor. Good example of its period.
