SD8432NW CHURCH STREET 906-1/16/32 (West side) 29/09/77 Kay monument approximately 30m south of Church of St Peter (Formerly Listed as: CHURCH STREET (West side) Monument to the Kay Family in St Peter's Churchyard)

Monument to various members of the Kay family. Probably mid C19. Commemorates: (i) Elizabeth, wife of William Fishwick of Green Bank and eldest daughter of Thomas Kay, d.1831; (ii) Thomas Kay of Laund House, Rossendale, d.1835; (iii) William Greenwood Kay, son of Thomas Kay of Laund House, d.1836. Sandstone and polished granite. Square tomb chest with clasping corner pilasters which have Greek key and anthemion ornament, and inset polished granite panels with inscriptions on 3 sides; massive superstructure composed of a pedestal with scrolled console supporters at the corners, carrying an elaborate gadrooned urn. Forms group with Chaffer monument (qv) and Waddington monument (qv) approximately 20m north, and with Church of St Peter (qv).
