Farmhouse, now house. C15 extended and remodelled early C17 with later
additions and alterations. Timber framed, partly of cruck construction,
with rendered infill on red sandstone block plinth; machine tile roof.
Cruck-framed hall range in 2 bays aligned north-south with C17 cross-
wing projecting to east in 2½ bays forming T-plan. One storey and attic.
Framing: hall range has square and rectangular panels, 2 from cill to
wall-plate, with occasional short straight braces. Truncated cruck truss
to front gable cut by collar and tie beam truss (collar replaced by C20
timber). Similar collar and tie beam truss with jowled wall posts and
X-bracing above collar to rear gable. Cross-wing has 3 square panels
from cill to wall-plate with short straight braces to rear and queen-
strut truss with V-struts from collar to gable end. 1:2 windows, C19
and C20 casements including to flat-roofed dormers in bottom of roof slope
to C17 part. This has roughly central C20 boarded door under contemporary
open gabled porch. Internal end stack to right of cross-wing and ridge
stack to left. Interior. Ground-floor rooms have chamfered ceiling
beams and exposed timber frame (square panels) to walls, including cross
walls. Hall range has central true cruck truss with staggered single
purlins, collar and V-struts. Square-headed doorway cutting through collar
of cruck truss and C17 wide boarded floor boards show that first floor
is inserted. C17 part has queen-strut trusses and stepping of stone
chimney breast visible below ridge stack on first floor. C19 cast-iron
fireplaces and wide boarded floor boards. Alcock (1981), p. 143.
