House. Early and late C17 with later additions and alterations. Timber framed with painted brick infill; graded slate roof. 2 storeys and attic; 3 framed bays. Framing: close-set vertical posts with 3 middle rails and long straight tension braces to front, square panels to right gable end, carved bracket to front corner of left gable end suggests gable was formerly jettied. Mid- to late C19 fenestration, cast-iron and wooden multi-paned casements, 3 to first floor and one to either side of late C17 central porch, one also to inserted centre gable lighting attic. Porch has boarded door with decorated strap hinges; massive external limestone stack with C19 red brick shaft to right gable end. Lower early 019 gabled brick addition to rear. Mid-C19 school attached to left. Uncoursed limestone rubble, plain tile roof. One storey with gable breaking eaves to centre; 3 mullioned and transomed windows, that to centre with pointed head. Entrance through pointed doorway in lean- to to left with bell under gabled canopy to gable end. Interior of house: timber frame partly exposed throughout, chamfered spine beams with straight-cut and stepped stops. Infilled inglenook fireplace on ground floor to external stack; original oak staircase from first floor to attic. Collar and tie beam roof in 3 bays with double purlins cut through to front for insertion of gable. B.O.E. p.99.
