7/62 Disused Church of St. Swithun,
09/02/66 now Village Hall
(Formerly listed as Disused
Church of St. Swithun)
- II
Church, now village hall. 1828, by Daniel Robertson. Coursed limestone rubble
with ashlar quoins and dressings; stone-coped and gabled stone slate roof.
Single-cell plan. Norman Revival style. Roll-moulded east window with stiff-leaf
capitals on engaged shafts. 3-bay side walls have roll-moulded windows:
dentilled eaves. 1960's flat-roofed extension to north. Bellcote on west gable
rebuilt 1960's. Similar window above west door, which has double roll-moulded
arch with capitals carved in light relief on engaged shafts of 2 orders.
Interior: roof obscured. An early example of a Norman Revival church. One of the
capitals to the west door is carved with a Sagittarius, which may be a rebus of
the builder, Bowyer.
