Church of St Peter and St Paul

A Grade I Listed Building in Upton, Nottinghamshire

Squint.

Uploader's Comments

In the Middle Ages two masses were said in Upton church every morning - the Parish Mass by the vicar and the Chantry Mass by the Chaplain. Apparently some of the chaplains finished before the Parish Mass and took the offerings of the people. The Bishop therefore ordered that the Chantry Mass should begin after the Parish Mass. The squint was made in the wall so that the Chantry Chaplain could watch the movements of the vicar at the high altar.
