SK 5878 NE WORKSOP MEMORIAL AVENUE (North Side) 8/91 Worksop Central Library and Museum GV II
Library and museum. 1938, by Haslam, Son Holley. Ashlar and handmade brick with flat roofs and shallow dome with pavement lights. Cross plan with apsidal ends, lower flanking wings, and projecting wing each side; single storey, 15 bays. All windows metal framed with hori zontal ventilators. Main south front has central distyle Tuscan portico with moulded architrave, and frieze inscribed "Central Library and Museum"; above, parapet with Town Arms and flagpole. Flanked by 2 windows, and beyond, 5 further windows. Each end of central block has 6 windows. Above, domed rotunda with decorative bands and ashlar coping, and bronze finial. Symmetrical rear elevation has central wing with 7 windows, flanked by 4 windows and single metal doors with overlights. Interior has original cork wall panelling and original bookcases in former reading, room which has glazed false ceiling. Outside, entrance steps flanked by square stone piers of 4 stages with vase capitals. Pathway has 2 similar piers with round caps. Curved brick dwarf boundary wall with ashlar coping has 28 dwarf piers linked by 2 metal bands, and a pair of matching gatepiers with ornamental metal gates.
