Apethorpe is a pretty little Northamptonshire village to the west of Peterborough. Many English villages display old stocks, though quite often there are replicas. In the case of Apethorpe they are almost certainly the genuine originals dating from around 1780. The stocks, whipping post and bench form the most complete "punishment" monument in Northamptonshire. They were used for offences like minor theft and drunkenness. Around 1910 they were moved to the present shelter which was built for them. Prior to that they were in the yard of a pub - now demolished - in what is now part of the churchyard.
