GV II

Retort house. c1823. For Bristol and Clifton Oil Gas Company.
Squared coursed Pennant rubble with rock-faced dressings.
Rectangular, open plan. 2 storeys; 10-window range. Roofless;
paired gables to southern block, with a transverse single
gable block across the N end. Plinth, first-floor sill band,
moulded kneelers and coping. Semicircular-arched openings,
large doorways in the middle of each side, smaller doorways in
the 3-window gables, and large round windows in the gables.
Some cast-iron windows with glazing bars. INTERIOR: derelict
at time of survey. The Bristol and Clifton Oil Gas Co was

built in 1840. The retort houses (qv) and engine house (qv)
form an evocative group with the walls to Gasferry Road (qv).
