(West side)
No.1

GV
II

Shop with accommodation above. c1840. Probably by George
Webster. Limestone ashlar and roughcast with slate roofs.
3 tall storeys plus attic. Occupies a corner site and has 2
principal facades, both of which are treated similarly, with 2
bays facing south towards the Market Place, and 2 bays facing
east towards King Street. On the ground floor each has ashlar
dressings and a timber shop front with a central doorway
flanked by pilasters, and a fascia. The upper storeys have
glazing bar sashes in narrow painted surrounds with projecting
sills. Below gables (which are treated as pediments with
projecting verges with plain barge-boards) is a frieze
decorated with laurel garlands. At the apex of each gable is
an ashlar chimney cap with cornice. An oculus within the south
gable lights the attic. The corner between the 2 facades is
recessed and curved, with rusticated stonework on the ground
floor.
The King Street facade has a further bay to the right, with a
tall ground-floor window, a glazing bar sash on the 2nd floor,
and a C20 tilting window with glazing bars on the 1st floor.
The roof slope carries an attic dormer and there is a chimney
to the right.
