Statue of Dean Hook. 1902. By FW Pomeroy. Polished granite
plinth with bronze plaque with raised lettering: 'Dr HOOK/
VICAR OF LEEDS/ 1837-1859'. Bronze life-size statue on a
square base with raised lettering: 'THE GIFT OF/ T WALTER
HARDING/ 1903' and the sculptor's name.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the Revd Dr Walter Farquhar Hook was
instrumental in the development of a new liturgical and
pastoral mission for the Church of England in an urban
community and rebuilt Leeds Parish Church of St Peter, Hough
Lane (qv), consecrated in 1841. T Walter Harding owned the
Tower Works, Globe Road (qv), and paid for the construction of
City Square, designed by William Bakewell.
The statue was one of four standing on a balustrade facing out
of the square, towards the Post Office.
