Weir and sluice gates. c1799. For Benjamin Gott. Gritstone.
Weir approx 30m wide, bowed in plan, of graded stone slabs;
attached flanking walls of edge-tooled blocks. Sluice
construction includes similar flanking walls, stonework of
probably 2 building phases. Sluice gate mechanism probably a
double form, not in use.
The weir created a head of water to be carried down the goit
of Burley Mills built by Gott in 1799 (qv), the sluice gates
controlled the volume of the water reaching the mill wheels.
