House. 1964-8 by Leslie Gooday for himself. Predominantly brick construction with some concrete. Part copper roof. Central spine of one and a half storeys, with single storey bedroom wing and lower kitchen and garage at either end. Large open plan living space dominates the plan.
Picturesque modern style. Entrance from paved yard with timber pergola via glass door beneath overhang. Garden front has glazing of living room in single-storey projecting bay with base of boardmarked concrete, projecting over pool from concrete wall which extends to left forming retaining wall of terrace. The copper mansard roof with sloping lights spans from the bay across recessed garden door leading to split-level terrace to cover single-storey brick bedroom wing on right. End elevation of this wing has some windows with close-spaced brick mullions.
Interior. Many walls are white-painted second-hand Fletton brick with sack jointing. Living room has screen wall of board-marked concrete supporting upper studio, fireplace with arched recess, grey-pigmented cantilevered concrete shelf beneath, tapering concrete pier separating dining area, spiral stair with concrete treads in irregular shaped well. Soffit of Canadian birch plywood.
Own house by architect who specialised in domestic work and in exhibition design. This is perhaps his most successful and certainly his most personal work. A good example of the evolution of the 'contemporary' style rooted in Frank Lloyd Wright, with sensitive use of contrasted materials and picturesque planning.
