Row of 3 cottages. c1852. Probably by James Harrison, said to
have been for the second Marquis of Westminster. Flemish bond
brown brick with steep graded grey slate roofs.
2 storeys of 4 bays plus 2 narrower recessed bays.
Front-gabled end bays to the main block project. Plinth;
gabled central porch to No.8; yellow brick flush quoins to all
corners; central porch has door of 6 fielded panels, 1-pane
fanlight in round brick arch, bargeboard; a 10-pane
cross-casement left and right of entrance; a 1-storey canted
bay window to each projecting bay has four mullioned and
transomed lights with painted stone sill, frieze and cornice
to hipped roof; entrances to Nos 6 and 10 in recessed
end-bays. The first floor has a 10-pane cross-casement to each
side of porch, under dormer-gables and a similar casement to
each projecting bay. 2 brick ridge chimneys and 3 behind the
ridge.
The simply expressed rear has small walled yards and
wrought-iron flat-roofed porches with scrolled brackets.
INTERIORS not inspected.
With Nos 2 and 4, 12-18 and 3-17 Victoria Pathway (qv), this
item comprises an unusual example of mid C19 town planning
analogous to mid C20 Radburn layouts with a footpath serving
the fronts of the cottages and vehicular streets their rear.
