Nos.12 AND 14

GV

Pair of cottages. c1855. Probably by James Harrison, said to
have been for the second Marquis of Westminster. Flemish bond
brown brick with steep grey slate roofs.
2 storeys of 2 bays plus a recessed porch bay on each end;
some alterations. Plinth; 4-panel door, now part-glazed, with
fanlight in round brick arch; canted bay window with flush
sashes of 4, 8 and 4 panes with painted stone sills, frieze
and cornice to hipped slate roof with lead rolls; a similar
bay window but with glazing bars removed; glazed C20 porch
with door of 4 panes above 1 panel, 6-pane sidelights, glazed
side and roof. First floor has, in front-gabled main bays, a
16-pane recessed sash to No.14 and a horned sash with no bars
to No.12; exposed purlins; bargeboards; finials; central ridge
chimneys. The left side of No.14 has recessed 12-pane sashes
with painted stone sills and gauged brick flat arches, 3 to
ground floor and 2 to first floor. The right side is similar,
but with no glazing bars to ground floor or first floor and
12-pane recessed attic sash.
The rear has walled yards; a recessed sash, bars removed, to
No.12 and a 20-pane sash to No.14.
INTERIORS not inspected.
With Nos 2-10, 16 & 18 and 3-17 Victoria Pathway (qv), this
item comprises an unusual example of mid C19 town planning
analogous to mid C20 Radburn layouts with a footpath serving
the fronts of the cottages and vehicular streets their rear.
