The Gothick Folly to the north of Thomborough Hall

Gothick folly. c1790, restored late C20. Rubble stone with brick, ashlar and rubble stone dressings. Square keep with circular towers at each comer built against terraced wall, with octagonal turret. Main south front has central section within round headed brick arch with ashlar keystone. Central doorway with flat lintel in pointed arch opening and either side single pointed arch boarded windows with rendered openings. Flanking circular comer towers have arrow slits to the ground floor and boarded pointed arched windows above. Side facades blind. Top has octagonal lantern with partly collapsed walls, each face has a pointed arched window with rendered surround. This folly was built to enhance the gardens of Thomborough Hall, and stands on the top of a double terrace with dramatic views across the gardens and the town.
