14 houses, now mostly commercial premises. Early to mid C19
with several later C19 shop fronts of intrinsic interest.
Brick in Flemish bond with stucco dressings. Roof parapeted.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys over basement with 2 windows each. All
openings are flat-arched. Each unit with identical elevation.
Floor-to-ceiling 1st-floor windows open out onto a pair of
cast-iron balconettes: single balcony to No.227, heart and
anthemion railings to Nos 233, 237 & 249-253; fretted
anthemion pattern to No.241; Gothic Revival balconettes to
No.229. Projecting sills to 2nd-floor windows. All window
lintels of gauged brick.
Continuous joins between units; continuous entablature to
parapet of stucco. Sashes of original 6x6 design survive in
1st-floor windows of Nos 229-233, 245-249, one window on
No.251, and 253. Sashes of original 6x6 design survive in
2nd-floor windows of Nos 229, 233, 235, 249, 253; 3x3 to Nos
245 & 247. The ground floors of each have nearly identical
shop fronts, most are complete: entablature fascia as well as
ornamented bracket stop supported on channelled pilaster
placed on each party wall. Shop glazing and doors of a late
C19 design survive on Nos 231, 233, 247 & 249.
