Formerly known as: Nos.1 AND 2 FOLEY AVENUE.
Pair of semi-detached houses. 1881-82. By Henry Legg. For
Edward Gotto. Red brick with moulded brick panels, sandstone
and granite dressings, coved moulded plaster eaves, brown
tiled roof.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys plus attic with double row of dormers.
Original fenestration with ornamental glazing and coloured
glass in upper lights. Prominent chimney-stacks with ribbed
flanks and moulded caps. Cast-iron straining arches inscribed
F and 1882 connect Nos 21 and 23 with Nos 25 and 27 (qv).
Southern house, No.21, bears sandstone tablet inscribed 1
FOLEY TERRACE. Sandstone entrance porch with balustrade over
arched doorway flanked by cartouches. 3-storey bay projection
with pitched octagonal roof bearing weathervane. Venetian
window to first floor with carved keystone depicting a man's
head.
Northern house, No.23, inscribed 2 FOLEY AVENUE. Projecting
frontispiece of gauged brick with balustrades at first and
second floor levels above pilastered entrance.
INTERIORS: not inspected.
These houses with Nos 25 and 27 (qv) form a prominent group,
massively scaled and with bulbous details, adjoining the
listed Chalybeate well, also by Legg.
