Row of 8 houses, now shops. Early to mid C19, in 3 or more
builds; altered. Brown brick (No.76 painted white, Nos 84 & 86
rendered and painted white), with slate roofs. Double-depth
plan, mostly single-fronted, with various back extensions.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 11-window range. Nos 72 & 74, built as a
3-window pair, have a round-headed doorway in the centre, a
25-pane bow window with a frieze to the right, an altered
double-fronted shop front to the left and 3 windows at first
floor with raised sills and wedge lintels (all now with uPVC
glazing).
Nos 76-80 are an irregular 4-window range (1:2:1 windows):
No.76 has a central doorway flanked by 9-pane shop windows
(all under a C20 plastic canopy), and one square window above
with altered glazing; No.78, of 2 wide bays, has a continuous
double-fronted C19 shop front at ground floor, with a frieze,
and 2 square 4/8 sashes above; No.80, one narrow bay, has an
altered shop-front at ground floor and an altered window
above.
Nos 80 & 82, built as a pair, have doorways to the left with
wedge lintels and altered doors, square plate-glass shop
windows with pilastered surrounds, and 2 4/8 sashes above. Nos
84 & 86, also built as a pair, have late C19 shop fronts at
ground floor and 2 4/8 sashes above. 7 ridge chimneys.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Forms a group with Nos 68 & 70 (qv) adjoining to the right,
Nos 88-92 (qv) adjoining to the left, and with No.53 (qv),
No.55 (qv), No.57 (qv), and the Bold Arms Hotel (qv) opposite.
The row contributes significantly to the townscape, at a
sensitive site close to its centre.
