Bank. 1892, altered. By William Owen, for Parr's Bank.
Sandstone ashlar, green slate roof. Free Renaissance style.
Rectangular plan on corner site.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic; 2:3:2 windows (1:3:1 bays).
Symmetrical composition with a pilastered 3-bay centre
slightly recessed between gabled end bays; channelled
rustication to both floors, a frieze between floors, a moulded
cornice and pierced strapwork parapet to the centre with 2
urns, and end bays with tourelles and Dutch gables.
The 3-bay centre has a round-headed doorway and windows at
ground floor, all with stepped surrounds and keystones
(formerly cross-windows but now with plate glass), and
square-headed cross-windows at first floor with balconies and
cornices on consoles.
The outer bays each have one large round-headed opening at
ground floor: a recessed window to the left with a pilastered
surround and altered glazing, and a doorway to the right with
a semicircular hood on square vase-baluster pilasters, and
altered doors. Pair of narrow transomed windows at first floor
with segmental pediments; and an oculus in the gable with
foliated surround.
The right-hand return (to London Street) has 1:1:3 bays, the
second bay gabled, in matching style but without doorways.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Forms group with War Memorial in London Square (qv), and with
Post Office to left (qv).
