Four shops with attached verandah. Probably c1860-90, in
different builds and with various later alterations. Partly
coursed sandstone rubble with quoins but mostly red brick with
stone dressings (and part of this with red terracotta
dressings). Eclectic style with some Italianate features. Four
one-bay units at right-angles to the street.
EXTERIOR: Two storeys except the fourth unit which has a tall
added third storey. At ground floor the third unit (nos. 229 &
231) has a canted wooden-framed shop window flanked by
recessed entrances with panelling, but the others all have C20
shop fronts. At first floor the first unit (nos. 221 & 223) is
of stone and has a canted ashlar oriel of three round-headed
lights with moulded heads, imposts and keystones, the centre
rising into an open pediment; and an open-pedimented gable
with a small roundel.
The other three units all have canted flat-roofed oriels of four
round-headed lights, with a modillioned cornice carried
across; the second unit has a pedimented gable with
modillions, the third has only a pitched roof, and the fourth
(no. 233) has a tall third storey with a truncated pyramidal
roof, a raised gabled centre containing a 2-centred arch with
a 2/2 sash and terracotta enrichment in the tympanum, a
run-out impost band, terracotta panels and panelled frieze;
and a tall side-wall chimney to the right.
The attached verandah is eight bays with cast-iron columns which
have foliated pedestals, debased crocket caps, scrolled
foliated brackets to the fascia beam, and a single-pitched
glazed roof.
INTERIOR: not inspected.

Forms group with Nos. 215-219 to the left (qv) and with Nos
235-241 to the right (qv); and the verandah is part of the
series which characterizes this street.
