Includes: Former Victoria Baths NEVILL STREET.
Public baths, now sports club, night club and public house.
Opened 1839; remodelled c1870; altered.
Sandstone ashlar, roofs of slate, corrugated sheet and glass.
STYLE: French Classical.
PLAN: Large irregular rectangular plan, with entrance range on
west side.
EXTERIOR: 2-storey, 3-window entrance block flanked by
single-storey, 6-bay side wings. The entrance block
(remodelled c1870), with banded corner pilasters, cornice,
parapet and 2-stage pavilion roof, has 2 round-headed doorways
with paired Roman Doric columns and double pedimented
entablature. One round-headed window between them. At first
floor (reversing this arrangement) a central window framed by
paired columns and a segmental pediment flanked by plain
windows with paired pilasters over the outer ground-floor
columns.
The pavilion roof is raised over the centre, with a bull's-eye
window to the front, and both this and the lower side roofs
now lack their former ornamental iron cresting.
The side wings have round-headed openings divided by paired
pilasters.
Right-hand return (to Nevill Street) of 3 bays in similar
style, has similar Classical entrance in centre.
INTERIOR: altered and remodelled, including C20 swimming pool.
