Description

BRIGHTON

TQ3303NW ARUNDEL PLACE
577-1/50/8 (East side (off))
Arundel Place Mews Units 2, 3, 4, 8,
8A & 9

GV II

Mews, built to serve eastern side of Lewes Crescent and Sussex
Square. 1840-1860. Stucco scored to imitate ashlaring. Hipped
roofs of slate.
PLAN/EXTERIOR: this designation applies only to the buildings
along the north and east sides of the courtyard, a group which
forms a roughly L-shaped plan: 3-window range on the north
range, 4-window range to the east. The former has a 3-window
return facing south to the east of which is a single storey
building of one-window range. The garage to the extreme east
of the group is excluded from this listing, as are the
buildings at the western mouth of the courtyard.
The following description begins with that range which forms
the north side of this courtyard. Original scheme called for
round-arched openings on the ground floor, similar to those
found on Nos 11 and 12 Arundel Place (qv) with which these
form a group. In the north range, one high, flat-arched
carriageway with double plank doors and wrought-iron strap
hinges of original design. To the right 2 flat-arched
entrances with semicircular overpanels. On the adjacent
elevation 4 round-arched openings, 2 with C20 entrances;
original glazing bars to the pair nearest the corner. On
return of right-hand, or eastern wing there are 2 round
windows with sloping jamb. All first-floor windows flat arched
with projecting sills. Bracketed eaves. The rear elevation of
the group to Eastern Place, which is included in this list,
has 7 identical windows to the ground floor with a 7-window
range above; all first-floor windows but those in the third-
and fifth-ranges have 8/8 sashes of an original design. Stacks
to centre of hip ridge and to outside walls.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Included for group value with the major Lewes and Sussex
Crescents.
