Description

BRIGHTON

TQ3104SW EAST STREET
577-1/64/224 (South side)
20/08/71 No.29

II

Terraced house, now restaurant and offices. Late C18 or early
C19, with mid to late C19 shop front. Brick in Flemish bond.
Mathematical tile facing to spandrels of bay. Roof obscured by
parapet.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys over basement. One window range. The
ground floor taken up by a shop front: entablature with dentil
cornice terminating at each party wall in a large console
bracket stop. Above, in the centre of the elevation, a
3-storey segmental bay with tripartite, flat-arched windows.
The bay stops just below the parapet, which rises slightly in
the centre to form a very shallow and unadorned pediment.
There are sashes of early C19 design to the bay windows: on
first floor, 6 x 9 to centre and 4 x 6 to sides; on second
floor, 6 x 6 to centre and 4 x 4 to sides; and on third floor,
3 x 3 to centre and 2 x 2 to sides. The window heads of the
top storey have wooden louvres of an original late C18 to
early C19 design. The top of the bay is finished with an
entablature. Stacks to party wall.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Nos 26-31 and 33-36 East Street (qv) face onto what is, in
effect, a small square, which is formed by the widening of
East Street at its northern end. Legend has it that this group
was built on the site of a small wharf on an inlet.
